Depending on how you code your platform, it may cost a lot.
If you want to decrypt or get values in your lambda functions, it will increase.
I got clients who got more than 1 millions api requests per day and more internally… 
So yeah, managing env vars the old way with simply a file is easy to understand with 100+ developers and 500+ services ! 
Different problems, different solutions. 
Right now, there are multiple teams who are happy with this small trick.
